Writers and raconteurs, the pair haunted Soho’s establishments for much of their lives. While Bernard was renowned for his Low Life column in the Spectator, these pages collect his photos of the Soho he loved, with 40 or so vignettes by Frank Norman, an acclaimed author in his own right.
The book takes in every corner of Soho's square mile - from butchers, patisseries, strip-joints and clip-joints to more specific characters such as Muriel Belcher, hostess of the Colony Club; and the proprietors of Quo Vadis, Wheelers, Foyles and The French House.
Soho Night & Day is not a nostalgic history or a guidebook (though it does include elements of both those things). It presents a unique view through the lens of two eminently qualified Soho hands, and as Barry Miles puts in his intro, “You can still look down Dean Street and imagine Frank and Jeff standing, a little tipsy, debating which pub to go to next. And follow in their footsteps.”
